A walk by the freeway

For someone who is after uncovering happiness in little things, even a routine day can have something in store. That day was another such moment. I know it’s just 4 miles but I never walked along a US freeway before. It was around 8:00 pm and every day I was commuting between office and home in Uber. On that particular day, I wanted to do something different after a tiring (now I know that it’s correct definition is not tiring but boring) day at work. So, this crazy thought came to my mind that I would go home on foot taking the route by the freeway. First of all, there was no footpath and I was walking in opposite direction to the traffic on the slightly damp grass path.

And there is the most amazing part. The wind was blowing with reasonably good force, bringing freshness to the air and rejuvenating my lost soul. The only thing I disliked about the whole hike (well, maybe I can call it an urban hike) was the bright flashing lights of vehicles(okay, cars. That’s all I see in the US, 98% of the time). No matter how hard I tried, I could never appreciate or enjoy the skyscrapers in the concrete jungles.

Those roadside flowers who had no one to take care of them but grew so healthy, happy and fresh, learned everything by themselves told me that night, one of the secrets of embracing the life as it happens to you when the moon was watching us from the sky. I walked for an hour and collected enormous happiness for the coming few days. The satisfaction I get from doing a physical activity never equaled to the irritating comfort I have felt when I stare at a screen the whole unproductive day.

I’m still waiting for that one moment in my life which compels me to break all the enigma built around me one step at a time. I can feel the silent roars of millions and trillions of people in miserable situations which are so close to mine. It’s not wrong to wait for that confirming reassuring moment. In fact, I feel that it’s very similar to an endurance test that an athlete undergoes to win a tough competition. After all, we are in our own rat races.
